SAMSHERPUR

Samsherpur is about 30 kms away from Akole. Cluster office is located at Samsherpur. Baseline survey was conducted in 7 villages of Deothan cluster namely Samsherpur, Savargaon Paat, Ghodsarwadi, Tahakari, Keli, Sangwai and Khirvire.

• 80% of families hold animals out of which 52% maintain only large animals and 28 % of them
  maintain small animals also. Other 7 % families possess only small animals. Thus in all 35 % of the
  families are holding small animals.
• Only 13% of the families do not possess animals.
• Average number of cattle holding / family is 4.

Agriculture:

• Irrigation: Major source of water for irrigation is well. However river water is also used in significant
  area (23%)
• Large proportion of land in the cluster is under irrigation. 68% of the land is under irrigation and 32%
  of it is rain fed.
• Major area is under Bajra cultivation (40%) and next to it in order are wheat (26%) and different
  pulses (17%).
• Significant area is under vegetable cultivation too, and, tomatoes and onions are the crops grown
  under this group. Totally 26% of the area is under this cultivation with tomatoes and onions in
  17and 9 per cent areas respectively.
• Near about all the farmers (98%) have adopted using chemical fertilizers, and most of them (78%)
  use more than 100 kgs each. Remaining of them use 50 kgs or less each.
• However only 6% of the farmers have followed the practice of getting their soil tested. May be,
  lack of awareness of its need or difficulties in accessing the facility.
