AHEMADNAGAR

Ahmednagar is the largest district (in terms of area) in the state of Maharashtra having 5.66% of the area of the state. It has the area of 17304 sq. km. The district is situated in the central part of the state, bounded to the north by the districts Nashik and Aurangabad, to the east by districts of Beed and Osmanabad, to the south by Solapur and Pune, to the west by the districts of Thane and Pune. Ahmednagar is known for its sugar factories and is also famous as the birthplace of the cooperative movement in the state.

Population (2001 census): 4,040,642. The district is 19.89% urban as of 2001. Male female ratio is 941. Literacy rate for men is 75% and for women 64%. Scheduled tribes and scheduled castes constitute 7.5% and 12% population of the district respectively.

The average annual rainfall in the district is 501.8 mm. (19.76"). Though heavy near the Sahyadris in Akola and plentiful in the hilly parts of Sangamner, Rahuri, Shevgaon and Jamkhed, the rainfall is uncertain.

Western Hilly Region: Akole is situated in this region. We have two clusters namely Samsherpur and Deothan in Akole block. The hill ranges of Adula, Baleshwar and Harishchandragad lie in this region and various high peaks are found in the same region. Kalsubai of height of 5427 feet, the highest peak in the Sahyadris, lies in this Region. Pravara and Ahula are the main rivers flowing from the area.

Devthan and Samsherpur both the clusters are located in Akole block. Deothan is 10 kilometers where as Samsherpur is about 25 kilometers from Akole. Major crops in the area are Paddy, Bajara, Tomatoes, wheat and pulses.
